Drapery Designs

Not long ago, some very good friend purchased their first home. Full of excitement to decorate their home, they were perplexed by the problem of covering the expanse of windows at their front door.

Their house is full of floor-to-ceiling windows and they were eager to cover each one of them without ruining our view outside but didn’t wish to feel like fish in a fish bowl with uncovered windows, either. The front door has 4 inset windows, is bordered by 4 small vertical windows on either side and is crowned by a large inset rectangular window above it. Not wanting to put typical sheers over the door and its side windows, it took them quite some time before they finally came up with curtain designs for the entry door.

Their entry hall is actually more of an open space that adjoins the living and dining rooms. To give the area more definition, they painted the walls a greyish blue in contrast to the brown walls of the living room and the stone color of the dining area.

One night, they invited me over for dinner.  It was while we were all sitting and chatting in the living room, that the solution came. The entire area needed to be treated as if it was just one great window.

Now that I have given them that idea, they now need to decide on fabric and color.  Due to the open space, I felt it was important to bring color from the living area in to the entry hall for continuity. This is how brown became the color choice.

To save time and sanity, they decided to purchase the curtains rather than sew them themselves. I went to a local store with them to see what fabrics and colors were available. We were fortunate in finding a brown chevron chenille curtain in an extended length and quickly worked to hang them. We were all very happy to see that this window treatment added the extra accent to this area we wanted, and has provided the privacy we had hoped for.

This story shows that choosing curtain designs for the various rooms of your home can be quite an arduous task; one that required much patience and a great deal of imagination.  It also helps at times when there is someone else to bounce your ideas off of.
